Teaching statement

Teaching has been one of my passions. To me, one of the most important factors in this field is the classroom atmosphere; and building a proper atmosphere is the responsibility of the teacher. Giving respect even to the most naughty / weakest student in the class has been an important contributing factor. Although most of my teaching years have been in the traditional system, but with a disliking for one-way information flow, I always encourage interactive sessions and am elated by active participation of students in the lecture. In practice, I strongly advocate and encourage interactive teaching. My approach has always been student friendly, and I am proud on that count.

Over the past twenty-five years, I have served as a teacher, in many capacities; lecturer, Assistant Professor, Reader, Associate Professor and Professor both at the undergraduate and graduate levels teaching biochemistry in Kashmir and abroad. My teaching specialties include Biomolecules, Proteins, Enzymology and Molecular Biology. Today with the availability of information at fingertips, the teacher does not serve as an information source, but is more of a facilitator and a guide. Interactive teaching is what keeps all the parties involved in the class. My way of teaching is to give respect to the students and reach to the weakest student in the class. I have always believed that the success of a teacher is when he makes the students to realize their responsibilities and evokes in them an interest to peruse and understand the subject. During my short tenure of nearly three years at Qassim University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I have been involved in teaching biochemistry to The Medical students through their basic phase. The College follows a hybrid PBL system that always fascinated me. I have greatly enjoyed teaching and interactive sessions with the wonderful students. Along with that my informal interactions with students, staff and faculty made my stay memorable and has left an indelible mark through my memory lane.

Research statement

My lab is currently focused on studying the ER stress and Unfolded Protein response Endoplasmic Reticulum stress (ER-stress) caused by disturbances in cellular homeostasis leads to the initiation of a set of cellular responses at transcriptional and translational level. The responses directed at restoration of the cellular homeostasis operate through three parallel pathways collectively called as Unfolded Protein Response (UPR). UPR has been associated with pathological conditions like cancer, diabetes, obesity, liver damage, neurodegenerative disorders and aggregation diseases Recent preclinical and clinical studies have shown some small molecules that selectively modulate UPR arms have immense therapeutic potential as plausible treatment for these diseased states.

The main focus of our lab has been to study the unfolded response pathways in many diseased conditions including cancer, and to identify and develop new molecules that would modulate the unfolded protein response and could be employed in therapeutic intervention.
